What an Alcatraz ticket actually is

Every genuine ticket is the same two things: a round-trip ferry from Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing, run by Alcatraz City Cruises — the only company authorized to land passengers on the island — and admission that includes the award-winning “Doing Time” cellhouse audio tour, about 45 minutes of it. The crossing takes about 15 minutes, boats leave roughly every 30 minutes from 8:45am, and you can come back on any ferry. There is no gate to pay at on the island, and the vendors around Fisherman’s Wharf waving “Alcatraz tickets” are not selling genuine ones. The island itself is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, run by the National Park Service, and the ranger programs are free once you’re standing on it.

Day, night or combo

How the visit actually goes

Be at Pier 33 thirty minutes before departure — directions here. After the 15-minute crossing you land at the dock, and then comes the part brochures gloss over: a quarter-mile climb to the cellhouse, 130 feet of elevation, 10–15 minutes at a normal pace and steep in places. A free tram runs for visitors with mobility needs. The audio tour takes about 45 minutes; add the recreation yard, the New Industries Building exhibits on the 1969–1971 occupation and the gardens, and most people are back at the dock inside 2–3 hours. Two warnings from experience: the island runs 10–15°F cooler than downtown, so carry a layer whatever the forecast, and the return-ferry queue can reach an hour on busy afternoons. There’s no food service out there either — light snacks and bottled water at the bookstores is the extent of it, so eat before you board.

What disappoints people

I’ll be straight about the downsides, because the reviews are. The cellhouse gets crowded, night tour included — Karin, reviewing the night option, found the crowds no smaller than daytime despite what she’d been told, and Emily from Australia noted a May night tour was still bright. Some areas are off-limits for safety and some buildings sit behind construction fencing; Jacob from the UK flagged both. Robert called the buildings “rather dilapidated now”, then added there was plenty to feed the imagination, which matches my read. And fog can swallow the skyline views on any summer afternoon. None of that stops the place landing hard — Paul from Australia called it a confronting experience, and the conditions were very primitive; that’s the point of going.
