My verdict: this is the package I point most first-timers at. It bundles the genuine Alcatraz City Cruises ferry with island entry and a self-guided app, it lets you stay on the island as long as you like, and it often has dates when the official calendar shows sold out. The honest caveat is outside anyone’s control: parts of the island are closed off for safety, and some buildings sit behind construction fencing.

What it’s like on the day

The crossing takes about 15 minutes, then it’s a quarter-mile climb to the cellhouse — 130 feet up, steep in places, 10 to 15 minutes for most people.
